Project Overview
The Port of Los Angeles and California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 7 began work in March 2024 on a $130 million transportation project to reconfigure a major interchange at State Route 47/Vincent Thomas Bridge and Front Street/Harbor Boulevard in San Pedro.
This interchange connects to the 110 freeway, provides access to San Pedro, Wilmington and Terminal Island, and serves the West Basin Container Terminal. The reconfiguration will reduce travel times, alleviate congestion and improve motorist and pedestrian safety at this highly traveled roadway juncture.
Part of the project is replacing and relocating the SB SR 47 off-ramp on Front Street/Harbor Blvd. from the south side of the bridge to the north side of the bridge. Additional improvements include realigning the on-ramp to the NB I-110 connector; modifying the NB SR 47 off-ramp onto Harbor Blvd.; and modifying the NB SR 47 on-ramp onto the bridge toward Terminal Island.
The SR 47 Interchange Project addresses traffic connections that access the Vincent Thomas Bridge—not to be confused with the Vincent Thomas Bridge Deck Replacement Project, a separate project led by Caltrans.
(Caltrans is proposing the separate VTB Deck Replacement Project to replace the entire bridge deck and seismic sensors of the Vincent Thomas Bridge to preserve the functionality and structural integrity of the bridge deck and to enhance the bridge's overall safety. Get more information on that project, here.)
